Chomsky’s original work, called universal grammar, is the reason why humans can recognize grammatically correct yet nonsensical phrases, such as “colorless green ideas sleep furiously.” This paper discusses the question of whether Universal Grammar is relevant to the study of second language acquisition–in particular second language phonology.
